STANFORD, Calif. - Fifth-year senior outside linebacker Chase Thomas has been named a semifinalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, the first and only college football award to equally recognize athletic performance and the personal character attributes of the player.

Thomas currently leads Stanford with 51 total tackles (34 solo), and he is tied for third on the team with 10.0 tackles for loss. He has recorded 3.5 sacks from the outside linebacker position, forced a fumble and recovered two more fumbles - one for a defensive touchdown at Notre Dame. Thomas has one interception, which came in overtime of the Cardinal's 54-48 win versus Arizona. Last year a 2011 Sporting News All-American, Thomas has been named a 2012 Midseason All-American.

A 2012 team captain, Thomas has been a powerful leader for an historic Stanford defense which ranks No. 1 in the FBS in rushing defense (58.60), No. 1 in sacks (4.30), No. 1 in tackles for loss (9.10), No. 12 in scoring defense (17.20), No. 9 in third-down conversion defense (0.293) and No. 18 in turnover margin (+0.80). The Thomas-led defense has also this season recorded three of the top 10 defensive rushing single-game performances in Stanford history. The 76 yards of total offense allowed at Colorado is a school record.

Named after Pro Football Hall of Fame member, Ronnie Lott, The Lott Trophy is awarded to college football's Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. The Lott Trophy is given to the player who exhibits the same characteristics Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.

The Lott IMPACT Foundation awards $25,000 to the general scholarship fund of the winner's university and $5,000 to each of the three runners-up.

The other seven semifinalists are Johnthan Banks (CB, Mississippi State), Arthur Brown (LB, Kansas State), Travis Johnson (DE, San Jose State), Jarvis Jones (LB, Georgia), Eric Reid (S, LSU), John Simon (DL, Ohio State) and Manti Te'o (LB, Notre Dame).

Finalists for the award will be announced Nov. 28. The four finalists will be invited to the Dec. 9 Ninth Annual Lott IMPACT Trophy Awards Ceremony in Newport Beach, Calif. This year's keynote speaker will be Dr. Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of State and current Stanford professor.

Thomas last month was named the Lott IMPACT Player of the Week following his performance in Saturday's 21-3 win at Cal in the 115th Big Game.

Stanford's Owen Marecic received an Honorary Lott IMPACT Trophy in 2010.

No. 14/13 Stanford (8-2, 6-1) and Thomas next travel to No. 1/1 Oregon (10-0, 7-0) for a nationally anticipated Pac-12 North contest Saturday. The 5:00 p.m. kickoff will be broadcast nationally on ABC.
