Cardinal Receives No. 2 Ranking In Pre-Season

Toledo, Oh - The Stanford women's cross country team will be a prime contender for the NCAA title in 1999. In a pre-season FinishLynx NCAA Division I poll conducted by the Women's Cross Country Coaches Association, Stanford tallied 289 points compared to top-ranked Brigham Young with 299. Arkansas (265 points), Villanova (255) and Colorado (236) round out the Top 5.

Other Pac-10 teams include Washington (8th with 210 points), Arizona State (16th with 129 points), UCLA (20th with 61 points), Arizona (30th with 8 points), and Oregon (31st with 7 points).

The Cardinal returns two of the nation's top two runners in Sally Glynn and Julia Stamps. Glynn finished fifth at the NCAA's last year, while Stamps placed sixth. Both athletes have been numerous All-Americans in cross country, and track.

Both the women's and men's cross country teams open the 1999 season at the Nevada Wolfpack Invitational in Reno on Sept. 4. The races start at 8:30 a.m.

The men's pre-season poll will be released next week.
