No. 20 Stanford vs. No. 17 Denver
MPSF Championship Game
Saturday, May 3; 1:00 p.m. PST
Stanford Women's lacrosse is back on the title stage as they face off against Denver University for the third straight year in the MPSF Conference title game. The match is set for Saturday, May 3 at 1:00 p.m at Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of California-Berkeley. The Cardinal is coming off wins against St. Mary's 19-4 and 11-8 against the Golden Bears to qualify for the Championship game.
The Cardinal started off on Wednesday afternoon against St. Mary's in the first round and used a 14-2 first half to coast to a 14-2 victory. Sophomore Dana Lindsay led the way with five first-half goals in a game that was never in doubt. Nine Cardinal players scored goals in the victory, which setup a semifinal match against California.
The match against California proved to be very close, as was the first match on Feb. 23, when the Golden Bears used a late run to beat the Cardinal 11-9. The rematch at Memorial Stadium proved to have a different result late as Stanford took a 6-6 tie with 19 minutes left and ended up winning 11-8 to give them a shot at another MPSF Championship. Freshman Karen Nesbitt scored three goals in the victory and senior goalkeeper Laura Shane finished the match with 13 saves.
Stanford now faces Denver, who beat Oregon in their MPSF semifinal match by the score of 18-12. The Cardinal played the Pioneers just two weeks ago in Colorado and lost by the score of 13-9.
The 2007 MPSF Championship game in Davis, Calif. proved to be a thriller as Stanford held off Denver by the score of 12-11. The schools also faced off in 2006 in Eugene, Ore. in 2006 and Stanford also won that matchup a little more handily by the score of 12-6.
