Stanford, Calif. - The late Bill Walsh was remembered during a private memorial service held Thursday at Memorial Church on the campus of Stanford University. Guest speakers included Joe Montana, Steve Young, Roger Goodell, Dianne Feinstein, Eddie DeBartolo, Jr. and Mike White, while Harry Edwards delivered Walsh's eulogy. A host of other NFL affiliated and dignitaries were among the approximately 1100 invited guests.
Walsh passed away at the age of 75 on July 30 after a long battle with leukemia.
Walsh was the head football coach at Stanford on two occasions from 1977-78 and 1992-94. His two Stanford head coaching stints sandwiched his 10-year run as the head football coach of the San Francisco 49ers when he led the club to three Super Bowl titles (1982, 1985, 1989) and was twice named NFL Coach of the Year (1981, 1984).
A public memorial service is scheduled for Walsh at Monster Park in San Francisco on Friday. The service will begin at 11 am, PT, with stadium gates scheduled to open at 10 am, PT.
