Stanford, Calif. - One day after winning its third-straight NCAA Team title, five of the Cardinal women returned to the courts at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium to begin play in the NCAA Singles Championship.
Barnes, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, defeated Courtney Vernon of South Florida this afternoon, 7-5, 6-2. Barnes will take on Northwestern's Georgia Rose at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning in the round of 32.
In one of the last matches of the night, Deason used three sets to get past Alexandra Hirsch of Wake Forest for the 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win. She will take on top-seeded Audra Cohen of Miami tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
Durkin, ranked No. 34 in the nation, faced No. 35 Alexis Prousis of Northwestern and came away with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory to advance to the second round against Vanderbilt's Taka Bertrand, who upset fifth-seeded Zsuzsanna Fodor of California this afternoon.
Liu, the 2003 and 2004 NCAA Singles Champion and No. 8 seed this season, posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Marianna Yuferova of Virginia Commonwealth. Last season, a shoulder injury forced Liu to retire during her opening round match, it is her only loss in NCAA Singles play. She will face Anna Lubinsky of Texas A&M at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Logar, seeded 9-16 in the singles championship and the clincher in yesterday's NCAA title match, defeated Maja Kovacek of New Mexico, 6-0, 7-5, to advance to tomorrow's round of 32. She will face Helena Besovic of TCU at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Anne Yelsey, who earned a 9-16 seed in the singles draw, withdrew from the tournament before her match due to a strained quad. She and Barnes, the top-seeded duo in the NCAA Doubles Championship, will play their opening round match tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. against Alabama's Ashley Bentley and Robin Stephenson. Durkin and Liu will also play in the doubles draw tomorrow, opening against Tiffany Clifford and Sarah Foster of Texas A&M at 5 p.m.
