For the first time the PCCSC, Pacific Coast College Sailing Conference, will be naming a women's sailor, coed sailor, and team racing team of the week throughout the season. The distinction is meant to highlight outstanding performance in each category of competition, and it is nominated and voted on by sailors and coaches in the conference.
This week, Stanford sailors took two of the three honors. Hannah Burroughs '11 and Catherine Cu '12 were named women's sailors of the week for their outstanding performance in A division at the North 1 and 2 Regattas on Saturday and Sunday in Monterey Bay, hosted by CSUMB. The duo finished 3rd and 1st in their division in the two distinct events. Sailing in an open competition against both coed and women's teams, the Cardinal A division women led their team to a third overall finish on Saturday and the overall win in the North 2 on Sunday. Prevailing in the difficult conditions they faced, Burroughs and Cu certainly are deserving of this honor as nominated and voted by their peers from around the conference.
Stanford was also named the team racing team of the week for their performance at the Mendelblatt Team Race Intersectional Regatta hosted by University of South Florida and Eckerd College. In a deep field of 16 teams, the Stanford team tied for 3rd. In a wide range of conditions, the Cardinal team was competitive with top-tier teams from around the nation.
All members of the Stanford sailing team will certainly look to build on the early momentum as proven by these early successes throughout the season and into the conference and national championships.
