STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University women's gymnastics team is ranked No. 6 in the women's gymnastics preseason coaches poll. The No. 6 ranking is the highest preseason ranking in program history. The Cardinal, who earned a No. 6 final national ranking in 2003, tallied 751 points, finishing just seven points behind No. 5 Michigan.
UCLA, who has captured three of the last four NCAA championships, including winning the national title last season, garnered 27 first place votes and 938 total points for preseason No. 1 honors. The Bruins are followed in the poll by Georgia (895), who tallied eight first place votes, Alabama (864) and Utah (794). Alabama, Utah, and Michigan all received one first place vote.
The top 10 is rounded out with Florida (700) and Nebraska (700) tied at No. 7, Arizona State (628) at No. 9, and LSU (553) at No. 10.
The Cardinal, who return six All-Americans, open the season by hosting San Jose State, Sacramento State and Central Michigan in the Stanford Quadrangular on January 9, 2004. Stanford then begins a grueling stretch where the Cardinal will face seven consecutive opponents who are ranked in the preseason top 25. The Cardinal will host No. 17 Arizona on January 23, No. 15 Washington on January 30, and No. 21 California on February 20.
Stanford's road schedule is highlighted with visits to No. 9 Arizona State (1/18), No. 1 UCLA (2/8), No. 13 Oklahoma (2/13), and No. 11 Oregon State (2/27).
