STANFORD, Calif. - "We train for the last day of the year". Although we train with this quote in mind all year, it was definitely the driving force this week.
The Sunday following our away meet at Arizona, the team had a mandatory "day for yourself" that ranged from shopping, watching movies, and going to the farmer's market. We all had to report what we each did. After our day off, everyone was eager and ready to go. Monday's practice showed just how determined and strong this team is. This week was a hard gymnastics week, reiterating the fact that we are focused on the last day of the year as opposed to feeling great at the end of the week. With intense assignments on all four events, everyone was hustling while efficiently and energetically getting their work done. Strong emphasis on details was also a focus this week by eliminating leg separations, form deductions, and perfecting our dance. It takes extra effort and heart, but that is what it will take on the last day of the year and I have no doubt this team has what it takes.
Come Thursday, it was strange not to have to pack our bags to go on the road again. On Friday, we dressed up for a game day that probably made people walking by do a double take. While half the team turned to their dark sides, wore the legendary "black backless" leotards, and sported quite the layer of black lipstick and eyeliner, the other half of the team (who preferred the bright pink leotards) were the ballerinas with their hair slicked back in buns and even a few tutu's. Game day was filled with new faces on almost every event, which was motivating and shows just how important depth is.
As senior night was coming up on Sunday, many of the girls spent Saturday hanging out with their families or birthday shopping (Shout out to Spinner who turned 19 on Sunday!). We were stoked to compete in Maples Pavilion for the one and only time this season and to honor our beyond-amazing seniors. The theme was Casenio-Royale and like Skoly mentioned, "We really hit the jackpot" with these girls. They have influenced SWG in such a special way and we hope we came close to showing them truly what amazing girls they are.
As for the meet, every routine was big and confident; it will be hard just to mention a few. Amo had a lights out day, sticking her vault, nailing beam, and going big on floor. Dani was her own solid self on all four events and Shelley's bar routine was huge with two additions, including her full-in dismount that she stuck! Again, it's hard to just mention a few highlights, but all I can say is this is one heck of a team. This coming Sunday, we are off to Cal for our last meet of the regular season! Thanks for all of your support and to everyone who came out to Maples!
