Moscow, Russia - Stanford men's swimmer Peter Marshall took the bronze in the 100m back while teammate Markus Rogan finished eighth on the second day of the FINA Short Course World Championships in Moscow, Russia. Former Cardinal Tom Wilkens set an American record in the 400m IM as well.
In the men's 100m backstroke, Aaron Peirsol (Irvine, Calif./Irvine Novas) finished second, with Cardinal Peter Marshall (Atlanta, Ga/Stanford/Dynamo) taking bronze. Peirsol's 51.71 was second to Matt Welsh, a bronze and silver medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games (51.26). Marshall came in a close third, swimming to a 51.84 to win bronze. The medal is Marshall's first at a World Championships. Sophomore Markus Rogan (Wien, Austria) took eighth in a time of 53.27.
"It's fun to get a little more experience on the world level, and that's what this meet is about for me," said Marshall. "I had 14 races at NCAAs, so I'm feeling it a little now. But it's fun to be here. It's fun to race different people. I've never raced Matt Welsh, and I got to race Aaron [Peirsol] which is great."
Former Stanford swimmer Tom Wilkens (Middletown, N.J./Santa Clara Swim Club) turned in an amazing performance in the 400m IM to set an American record with a time of 4:04.82. The win is his first World title, as well as his first American record.
"I just wanted to concentrate on staying relaxed in the first half," said Wilkens. "So I tried to stay relaxed in the backstroke, and my backstroke felt really good. I just wanted to relax, but be aggressive on the walls, and the race shaped up well. I knew I had a good swim going, and I was hoping to be close to that world record, and maybe next time I'll get it. I'm very happy to be World champion, and to win my first World championships."
