COLLEGE STATION, Texas-- Stanford's Dwight Dumais finished sixth in the three-meter semifinal at the AT&T National Championship and is headed to Sunday's finale, while incoming recruit, Stephanie Phipps finished 10th in the preliminaries of the one-meter.
Dumais tallied 389.45 points in the afternoon semifinal, just over 11 points from Brandon Watson's third place finish of 400.70 points. Dumais' best dive was his sixth and last dive, a forward 2 ½ somersault two twist pike, which tallied two 8.0's and another 8.5. He also secured five 8.0's or better from the seven judges on his previous dive, an inward 2 ½ somersault pike for 72.00 points.
Dumais reached the next round after securing the 17th of the 18 spots in the preliminaries with 327.95 points. Consistency was a problem for the recent Cardinal senior, who did have seven of his 12 dives in the 60's and 70's, but also three at 42 or under.
Phipps tallied 249.25 points with five dives in the preliminaries, securing a score of 55.90 on her first dive, a forward 2 ½ somersault pike, which earned two 7.5's and an 8.0 from the seven judges. The top eight divers advanced to the finals.
The championships will be aired on Comcast Sportsnet California on August 23 at noon and on CSN Bay Area on August 28 at 6:30 p.m.
