"It was the deepest pool of really quality candidates we have had, which makes you feel great about the leadership on this team," said head coach Jim Harbaugh. "We have tri-captains this year - three terrific captains and wonderful guys. Ryan Whalen on offense, Sione Fua on defense, and Owen Marecic on both offense and defense. There is no honor greater than being elected captain of your football team by your teammates."
"Ryan Whalen is the consummate competitor and worker. Owen Marecic is the perfect football player and a true throwback. Sione Fua is a quiet leader but fiery competitor. All three captains are seasoned leaders, outstanding football players and guys who have always done right by this football program."
