In the last two weeks our team has brought new life and energy to the gym. Practices have been more upbeat, focused and productive. Everyone on the team has taken on a leadership role and is determined to work hard and finish the season with no regrets.
I am really encouraged by what I have seen from this team in the last two weeks. We are finally getting close to being the team I know we are capable of being as we are getting healthier and more confident everyday. We made some nice improvements this weekend on vault and floor. Alex competed her layout half on vault and Lauren added a double pike, and finished with a whip half front full punch front on floor.
This was the first weekend we were able to field a full team on vault. Not only did we have six competitors but we had five vaults that started at a 10.0. The vault team was aggressive and explosive and started the night off with a bang.
The bar team was also outstanding hitting 7 for 7 bar routines. Glyn, Tab, and Liz really stood out with great lines, and exciting routines. On balance beam our first four up hit their routines, but were a bit shaky and we had 2 uncharacteristic misses in the back. On floor our first four competitors were freshmen and they really set the tone for a fantastic final rotation. Unfortunately, in the end we had to count 2 misses on beam and a miss on floor.
As I said earlier we have made some big improvements and have taken some important steps forward. Overall we are on the right track. I know that if we can continue to put forth great efforts in practice everyday Friday nights will give our team a chance to taste success. I just want to thank all of our fans and people in the athletic department who really helped to make Friday night in Maples a huge success. We had almost 3,000 fans and hope to get even more support on March 6th when we compete in a co-ed meet with the men's team against the University of Alabama.
Our mantra for this week is: Desire - putting everything you have into what you are doing, Own it - remembering that we are in control of our gymnastics and our actions and Family - we can only reach our goals together.
I hope to see you this Friday night at 7:30 pm as we host Arizona State University at Burnham Pavillion. Please come out and support SWG.
