WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - In a vote by the Conference coaches, Stanford's top-ranked duo of Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey were named the Pac-10 Women's Doubles Team of the Year. Barnes and Yelsey, along with Amber Liu and Theresa Logar, were also selected to the Pac-10 First-Team.
Stanford (24-0) captured its 19th conference championship last month with a perfect 8-0 record in Pac-10 play. Barnes and Yelsey were honored as the doubles team of the year, the first honor for either player, after winning their second conference doubles title in Ojai in April. The pair will look to return to the NCAA Finals at the end of this month and carry a 35-3 record into the first round of the NCAA Team Championship this Friday against Quinnipiac.
With four players ranked in the top-11 in the most recent ITA poll, Stanford leads the way with four all-conference selections. Eighth-ranked Liu, a four-time First-Team All-Pac-10 honoree, will help the Cardinal in the team championships and will also compete in the singles and doubles championships. Barnes, currently ranked No. 5 in the nation in singles, is a four-time all-conference honoree and three-time First-Team selection. Logar, a three-time all-conference honoree, earns her first selection to the First-Team this year, with a 32-5 overall record, a 17-0 mark in dual matches and a No. 10 singles ranking. Yelsey, with a 21-0 dual record, is ranked No. 11 in the country en route to her first Pac-10 Conference honor.
The Cardinal kick off the NCAA Tournament with First and Second round action this weekend at the Taube Tennis Center. Championship play will continue at Stanford with the Women's Round of 16 on Thursday, May 18 and will wrap up on Monday, May 29 with the men's singles and doubles finals.
