Key Top-Five Battle Coming to the Pool This Weekend

STANFORD, Calif.-- No. 2-ranked Stanford men's swimming (3-0, 0-0 Pac-10) will host No. 4-ranked Arizona (4-0, 1-0 Pac-10) on Friday at 2 p.m.and Arizona State (2-4, 0-1 Pac-10, prior to swimming at Cal on Friday) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in two key dual meets. Both are meets with the women's teams.

Friday's showdown will feature two of the best teams in the nation, in the Wildcats, who feature the fastest time in eight individual events and the Cardinal, who feature 22 swimmers ranked in the top-15 nationally. At last year's NCAA Championships, Stanford was third and Arizona was sixth.

The Wildcats are the last team to beat the Cardinal in a dual meet, when then No. 3 Arizona beat then No. 2 Stanford 184-114, January 26, 2008, a span of 14 dual matches and nearly two years. Stanford beat Arizona 191-107 last year

Austin Staab will be counted on heavily in the sprints this weekend, as he features the nation's 10th-fastest 50 time (19.95) and 14th-fastest 200 time (43.93). Alex Coville has the 16th-fastest 50 time (20.05). They will have to contend with Jordan Smith, Craig Jordans, Cameron Owen and Michael Small, all amongst the fastest Wildcats and the nation's best sprinters.

In the distance events, American 800-meter shortcourse record holder Chad La Tourette, along with senior captain David Mosko, have some of the fastest 500 and 1650 freestyle times. The Cardinal feature four swimmers ranked in the top-20 nationally in the 1650, including La Tourette's third-best time of 14:56.20. Arizona's Jean Basson has the nation's top 1650 swimmer at 14:50.32. He was last year's NCAA champion in the 500. ASU's Caleb Veazey was a part of the U.S. World Championship Trials over the summer, along with Stanford's Curtis Lovelace.

In the backstroke, Eugene Godsoe (46.67) has the nation's top 100-yard time, with Arizona's Cory Chitwood at No. 2 at 46.93. Chitwood also has the nation's top 200 time (1:41.65). Godsoe is a two-time national collegeswimming.com swimmer of the week for his performances in the fall. In the longer discipline, Stanford freshmen Matthew Thompson (1:44.39) and Matthew Swanston (1:44.44) each have top-15 times in the 200 event.

The Cardinal's best breaststrokers, John Criste and Lovelace will face off against two of the nation's best, Marcus Titus and Chris Burckle. Thirteen breaststrokers from the two schools rank amongst the nation's top-20 in the 100 and 200.

Staab, the defending NCAA Champion in the butterfly, also has the nation's top time in the 100, at 46.31. Arizona's Alex Tipton has the NCAA's fourth-fastest time at 46.94. In the 200, three Cardinal rank in the top-20, led by Bobby Bollier's time of 1:45.37 (7th). Tipton has the nation's top 200 time at 1:43.00.

In the individual medleys, Jack Brown has the nation's fastest times in both events. In the 400 IM, Thompson (14th) and Josh Charnin-Aker (15th) have two top-20 NCAA times. Xavier Mohammed is ASU's top utilty man.

In the relays, both squads have two of the nation's top-10 fastest 200 freestyle and medlay relay teams. In the 400 medley relay Arizona has the nation's fastest time and Stanford as the fourth-best time. The Cardinal also have the third-fastest 800 free relay team.

In diving, the Cardinal feature two All-Americans in Dwight Dumais and Brent Eichenseer, as they will contend against Arizona's two-time All-American Ben Gado and ASU Olympians Constantin Blaka (Austria) and Riley McCormick (U.S.). Of note, ASU Head Coach Mark Bradshaw was the head coach for the last two Finish Olympic teams.

Dumais' top marks of the season are 370.50 and 427.80 in the one and three-meter, while Eichenseer's top marks or 320.55 and 388.60.
