Excited to get on the water after a few down months, the coed and women's sailing teams did not miss a beat. Six sailors traveled to Tampa, Florida to compete in the Mendelblatt Intersectional Team Race co-hosted by the University of South Florida and Eckerd College. Another eight sailors, including a coed team and a women's team, traveled to CSU Monterey Bay for the first of the North Points events, which are a series of qualifying regattas for the district championships at the end of the season. With little time on the water so far this season, the team looked to pick up where they left off at the end of the fall season.
In the first team racing event for the team this year, Taylor Grimes '09, Carolyn Prioleau '12, Cole Hatton '11, Kelly McKenna '09, Peter Stemler, and Laura Lilly '12 represented the Cardinal well. Competing against 13 other teams from across the nation, Stanford made it through the qualifying round and advanced to the final round of eight. Sailing in some difficult conditions with large wind shifts common across the racecourse, the team was able to finish the round of eight in an unbelievable five-way-tie for third at 3-4. The final results, with all appropriate tie breakers applied, placed the Cardinal in 5th overall.
Head Coach John Vandemoer was happy with the performance of his team, commenting, "the sailors showed strong resolve, and were never out of a race."
The next team race event will be in two weeks at the Bob Bavier Team Race hosted by the College of Charleston.
At the North Points 1 and 2, the Cardinal was well represented by both the coed team and the women's teams. Sailing both Saturday in the North 1 and Sunday in the North 2 for the coed was Justin Doane '12 and Alex Dunlap '11 in A division and Benjamin Pedrick '11 and Laura Garvey '12 in B division. Competing for the women's team was Hannah Burroughs '11 and Catherine Cu '09 in A division and Megan Grove '10 and Ariane Fisher '12 in B division. In the rainy and ever-changing wind conditions offered by Monterey Bay, the Cardinal coed team and women's team were 2nd and 3rd respectively on Saturday.
On Sunday, the women's team captured the event overall and the coed team finished a close second. In a rare opportunity to sail together, the women showed that "they are a force to be reckoned with," according to Stanford's Assistant Coach Erik Storck.
This coming weekend the coed team will travel to Charleston, SC for the Charleston Spring Coed Intersectional Regatta. The team will also send both a coed team and a women's team to the North 3-4 to be hosted by CMA. Finally, this weekend the team will host the annual Cardinal High School Regatta out of their boathouse in Redwood City. This regatta offers a chance to see the young crop of talent from all throughout California.
