Beijing, China - Top qualifying performances by United States athletes, including two by Stanford runners, highlighted a successful opening day for Team USA in track & field competition on Monday at the World University Games.
In the semi-finals of the men's 1,500 meters, the Stanford duo of Jonathon Riley and Michael Stember advanced to Wednesday's final. Stember, a 2000 Olympian, ran comfortably in the fastest heat of the day to win in 3:45.49 and advance. Riley, the 2001 NCAA champion in the 5,000 meters and who also is competing in the 5,000 meters in Beijing, used a strong kick to finish second in his heat in 3:51.31.
