STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University women's lacrosse team suffered a 7-6 loss to the No. 11 ranked Dartmouth Big Green. It marked the second consecutive one-point loss to a No. 11 ranked team, as the Cardinal fell, 6-5, to the then-No. 11 Vanderbilt Commodores on March 7th. With the loss, the Cardinal fall to 3-4 on the season, with all four losses coming to teams ranked in the top 20. The Big Green improve to 2-1 on the year.
Dartmouth would close out the half by scoring three straight unanswered goals in the final 14 minutes of the game. Casey Hazel scored twice, while Annie Leibovitz added one score.
The Big Green responded with two quick strikes in the follow two minutes as Whitney Douthett and Katie Killen added unassisted goals.
Midway through the second half, Stanford would cut Dartmouth's lead to 5-4, when freshman Bryanne Gilkinson found senior midfielder Abbi Hills. But Dartmouth was able to respond with another quick strike just two minutes later to extend its lead to 6-4.
The Cardinal would pull with in 6-5 on a free position goal by Bach, but the Big Green answered with an unassisted goal by Lana Smith to give Dartmouth a 7-5 advantage.
Stanford would cut the lead to 7-6 when sophomore Nyerr Parham found Twist with just 40 seconds remaining in regulation. The Cardinal pressed for the equalizing goal but Dartmouth was able to hold on for the win.
Twist led the Cardinal attack with two goals and an assist, while Pantano, Cahill, Bach, and Hills all added one goal. Senior goalkeeper Christina Saikus collected a game-high 13 saves on the day.
Stanford will regroup and take on Ohio on Tuesday, March 23 at 3:00 pm (PT) at Maloney Field.
