The Cardinal faced a full weekend of competition in regattas across the country. In the Sloop PCC's in California Seniors Eddie Conrad, Craig Page, and Graham BZ finished in third in J-22s. Across the country in the Stu Nelson Women's Regatta the women finished fourth overall while the coed team finished 13th a few miles north at the Hoyt Trophy regatta hosted by Brown University.

The Cardinal kicked off the weekend at the Northern Sloop eliminations on Friday. Seniors Eddie Conrad, Craig Page, and Graham BZ competed in Richmond in J-22s. Placing second in the eliminations, the sloop team was invited back for racing Saturday and Sunday, in which only first place would be good enough for an invite to Sloop National's later this season in Texas. Going into the second day of competition the Cardinal was in fourth overall with nothing to lose. Allowing for a more aggressive strategy, Conrad and his crew fought hard, but a came up short in the end, finishing third behind the University of Hawaii and Cal Maritime respectively.

Stu Nelson Women's Regatta @ Connecticut College

Traveling east for the first time as a team, the Cardinal women looked to defend their #2 ranking as decided by the Sailing World coaches' panel (http://www.collegesailing.org/rankings.asp). Seniors Evan Brown and Sarah Schoknecht, junior Kelly McKenna, and sophomores Leigh Hammel and Megan Grove competed against the best women's teams in the country at the Stu Nelson Regatta, hosted by Connecticut College on the Thames River. Saturday greeted the team with trying conditions, the wind routinely shifting through 30 degrees and 5 to 10 knots of wind-speed. The Cardinal women figured out the conditions after a few races and began to compete where they knew they should. Needing a solid performance Sunday, Brown and McKenna answered with a 1st and a 6th to finish third in A division. Going into the last race in B division there was a four way tie for fourth place overall. Not fazed by the pressure of the situation, Hammel and Schoknecht equaled their best finish of the regatta, getting a 2nd place to cement the Stanford women into fourth overall.

"The Ladies sailed well and improved every race" commented Coach Jay Kehoe "it is always hard to wake up and compete at 9:30 am on the east coast. After the 3rd race both divisions were competing at a very high level."

Hoyt Trophy @ Brown University

Just a little ways up I-95 from the women, a young co-ed team of freshmen Cole Hatton and Hannah Burroughs, sophomore Peter Stemler, and seniors Carrie Denning and Marianna Beardsworth tested their mettle against the best in the country at the Hoyt Trophy, hosted by Brown University. Difficult conditions aside, the Stanford team did not take long to find their stride. Coming out of the weekend much better for the experience, Stemler and Burroughs finished 13th in the first A division start for both skipper and crew in a big intersectional. In B division, Hatton and Denning sailed a consistent series to place fifth, despite a disappointing last set. "I am very happy with the improvements made by the team sailing against such good competition this weekend" commented Assistant Coach Erik Storck.
