Stanford, Calif. - Juniors Sarah Bach and Megan Burker each scored four goals to lead the Stanford women's lacrosse team to a 12-7 victory over Colgate on a soggy Maloney Field on Friday evening. With the win, the Cardinal snaps a two-game skid and improves to 4-2 on the season, while the Raiders fall to 5-3.
The two squads set out in a defensive struggle early on, as the contest remained scoreless through the first 10 minutes. Bach had an excellent opportunity at the 23:00 mark, beating Colgate goalkeeper Sue Bielamowicz with a shot that hit the post. The Cardinal struck first with 19:01 left in the half, as junior Nyerr Parham tallied her third goal of the season off of an assist from Burker. The score remained 1-0 in Stanford's favor for close to 10 minutes, as Colgate's defense stopped numerous Cardinal attacks on goal.
The Raiders evened up the score at the 9:42 mark, as Katie McVeigh scored an unassisted goal to knot the game at one. The Cardinal answered back just 19 seconds later, as Bach tallied an unassisted goal of her own to retake the lead. Bach netted her second straight goal with 8:05 left in the period, and Stanford took control as Burker assisted on a goal by freshman Daphne Patterson to push the Cardinal lead to 4-1 with just 7:19 remaining in the half. Colgate finished the half strong, as Megan Janson and Tara Casey scored back-to-back goals to close out the first frame and cut the Stanford advantage to one.
Colgate picked up where they left off early in the second period, as McVeigh tallied her second score to pull the Raiders even at four. The Cardinal answered back with three straight goals, with freshman Megan McClain registering her first career assist on Bach's third score of the evening at the 24:34 mark. Freshman Ariana Parasco and Burker both tallied unassisted goals to push the Stanford lead to 7-4 with 23:30 remaining in the contest. Colgate fought back with a goal from Casey, and McVeigh assisted on an Anne Coomber goal to cut the Cardinal lead to one at the 19:56 mark. Parasco answered just over a minute later, scoring on a free position shot to set off a string of four un-answered Cardinal goals. Sophomore Jessica Verrilli assisted on a Burker score at 17:32, and Bach capped off her four-goal night with an unassisted score with 15:48 remaining. Senior Kelsey Twist assisted on a Burker's third goal at 13:17 to give the Cardinal a commanding 11-6 lead. Colgate's McVeigh finished off her hat trick with 11:25 remaining, but Stanford was able to maintain possession for the remainder of the contest. Burker wrapped up her four-goal evening with five seconds remaining in the game, receiving a pass from Parasco and scoring her 12th goal of the season.
The Cardinal out-shot the Raiders by a 26-21 margin. Burker led the team with seven shot attempts, while Bach recorded six. McVeigh led Colgate with six shot attempts. Freshman Laura Shane was excellent in the cage once again, collecting 11 saves including seven saves in the second half. Bielamowicz recorded eight saves on the evening.
Stanford wraps up its season-high four-game home stand on Saturday night, as the Cardinal plays host to Cornell. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm at Maloney Field.
