Stanford Stuffs New Hampshire, 18-9

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford (2-0, 1-0 MPLL) opened the 2003 home season with a convincing 18-9 win over New Hampshire (0-1, 0-0 America East) this afternoon at Maloney Field. The Cardinal jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Wildcats put their first score on the board just over nine minutes into the game.

Stanford freshman Kate Horowitz earned her first start in the goal and played the entire 60 minutes to rack up seven saves. Fellow freshman Megan Burker netted four goals today, as did sophomore Kelsey Twist. Twist also helped her teammates with three assists while sophomore Julia Calzonetti dropped in three goals and three assists. Sophomore Claire Calzonetti added three goals while Abbi Hills and Sarah Bach both scored twice. Nina Pantano added two assists on the day as the Cardinal scored 18 times, eight of which came on an assist.

New Hampshire senior Jessie Groszkowski and sophomore Jess Burnap led the Wildcats with three goals each, but the team could not get past Stanford. After Burnap tallied New Hampshire's second goal of the day, Stanford chalked up six straight goals to extend the Cardinal lead to 11-2. The Wildcats posted two goals in the final minutes of the first half to cut their deficit to 11-4, but Stanford regained momentum after the break.

Freshmen Bach and Burker netted two quick goals for the Cardinal to open up the second half before New Hampshire added a score, but Stanford stayed in control for the remainder of the match as Bach added her second goal and Twist and J. Calzonetti tabbed two apiece to earn the 18-9 win

Stanford will travel to Columbus, Ohio this Friday, Feb. 28th for a 3:30 game against Ohio State before returning to The Farm for a 4 p.m. match versus Denver at Maloney Field.
