Box Score

Stanford, Calif. - Senior Nina Pantano scored three goals and sophomore Michelle DeChant tallied the game winning goal with just over seven minutes remaining as Stanford edged Cal at Maloney Field on Friday evening, 11-10. The Cardinal improves to 6-4 and 4-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play, while the Golden Bears fall to 6-5 and 1-1 in conference action.

Cal wasted no time in getting on the board to start the game, as Laura Cavallo tallied an unassisted goal less than a minute into the contest. The Cardinal regrouped and seized the advantage after a Kelsey Twist goal at the 28:39 mark tipped off a four-goal Cardinal run. Pantano, freshman Megan McClain, and freshman Daphne Patterson all scored before a Leanne Zilioli goal on a free position shot stemmed the tide for the Bears. The two squads then traded goals, with junior Sarah Bach tallying to push the Cardinal lead to 5-2. Following a Cal score, Pantano netted her second goal of the night with 7:52 remaining in the half, and sophomore Michelle DeChant scored at the 3:43 mark to give Stanford a 7-3 advantage. The Bears got a goal from Jocelyn Paul with 25 seconds remaining in the half to move within three at the break.

The second half featured the same exciting pace displayed in the first period, and Cal got the frame off to a good start with a goal from Zilioli. The Cardinal answered with a free position goal from sophomore Liz Piselli before the Bears went on a three-goal run tie the game at eight. Junior Megan Burker assisted on Bach's second goal of the night to give the Cardinal a brief lead at the 17:18 mark, but Cal answered back with a pair of goals to take the lead for the first time since the beginning of the contest. Molly Brady pulled the Bears even with an unassisted score, and Cavallo put Cal ahead with a goal at the 8:50 mark. The Cardinal stormed back as Pantano finished off her hat trick with an unassisted score with 8:18 left in the game. DeChant tallied at the 7:02 mark to put the Cardinal ahead, and freshman goalkeeper Laura Shane made a pair of acrobatic saves to keep the Bears from equalizing in the game's final minutes. Stanford was able to maintain possession and held on for the remainder of regulation to seal the win.

Pantano led all scorers with three goals, while DeChant and Bach added a pair of scores each. Twist assisted on two first half goals, and freshman Bri Ned and junior Thea Lorentzen each collected a team-high three ground balls. Zilioli and Cavallo each had two goals for Cal, and the Bears scored on five-of-eight free position attempts as a team. Shane made 13 saves in the cage for the Cardinal, while Cal's Hilary Lynch made 12 saves for the Bears. Both teams registered 26 shot attempts for the game.

Stanford hits the road next weekend, traveling to face top-ranked Northwestern on Friday and Notre Dame on Sunday.
