STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford women's gymnastics edged Washington 193.925-191.075 in its home opener Friday night before a sellout crowd of 1,220 at Burnham Pavilion. The victory is the first of the 2002 season for the Cardinal, who are now 1-1 on the campaign. Washington drops to 0-1.
Stanford topped the Huskies in three of the four categories to clinch the victory, outscoring Washington 48.525-48.300 on the vault, 48.625-46.525 on the bars and 48.500-47.550 on the floor exercise.
Sophomore Caroline Fluhrer (Seattle, Wash.) posted a match-high 9.875 on the vault, as Stanford captured three of the top five spots in the event. The Cardinal was equally impressive on the bars, as Stanford placed in six of the top seven spots, led by sophomore Lindsay Wing (Cypress, Tex.) and senior Becky Meldrum (Mertztown, Pa.) with a 9.775.
Wing's 9.825 led all competitors on the balance beam, despite Washington winning the event and holding down four of the next five spots. Wing notched a match-high 9.775 on the floor exercise to lead all performers, while Mandy Delgado (Cupertino, Calif.) and Shelly Goldberg (Mequon, Wis.) tied for second place with a 9.700.
Emily Pritchard of Washington claimed the All-Around with a 38.925, while Katy Herbert (Chandler Heights, Ari.) finished second with a 38.225.
Tonight's win is also the first for Cardinal first-year head coach Kristen Smyth, who served the last five seasons as the associate head coach at Arizona State. The Cardinal travels to Tempe next Friday to hook up with the Sun Devils at 7:30 p.m. in a Pac-10 showdown.
