STANFORD, Calif.- With a total of 47 Stanford-affiliated athletes (46) and coaches (1) competing at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China, www.gostanford.com is your source for daily updates and extensive coverage throughout the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.
Cardinal fans will be able to check out event previews leading up to the Opening Ceremonies on Aug. 8, in addition to monitoring individual athletes with daily recaps, biographies, a TV composite schedule and an updated medal count.
In addition to the United States, Stanford athletes will also represent the countries of Austria, Brazil, Canada, Kenya, New Zealand and Tunisia. Of the 46 Stanford-affiliated athletes that will be competing in Beijing, 11 are current student-athletes.
Four years ago at the Summer Games in Athens, Stanford was represented by a total of 42 athletes and coaches who combined to win 17 medals, including three gold, seven silver and seven bronze. Stanford's medal count for the 2004 Summer Games was just four shy of the school-record 21 medals picked up by Stanford athletes at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, France.
Stanford will be well-represented in the water sports, with 21 athletes competing in the sports of swimming (8), water polo (7) and rowing (6). Stanford associates will also be competing in the sports of women's basketball (2), cycling (1), men's soccer (2), women's soccer (3), softball (3), tennis (2), track and field (6), men's indoor volleyball (2), women's beach volleyball (1), women's indoor volleyball (2) and wrestling (1).
