AMES, Iowa - The Stanford women's indoor track & field team had a successful trip at the Iowa State Invitational as five Stanford athletes provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships (March 9-10) last weekend at Iowa State's Henry Hoak Indoor Track Stadium.
Ashley Couper and Lindsay Hyatt both bettered the 800 meter provisional qualifying mark of 2:09.60. Couper finished third with a time of 2:08.25 while Hyatt placed seventh in 2:09.00. Earlier this year, Hyatt had earned a provisional time of 2:08.97. In the 3,000 meters, Elena Villarreal clocked in at 9:32.87, good for fourth place. Jillian Camarena's throw of 51 feet-8 1/4 inches in the shot put reached the provisional mark and also earned her second place in the event. Maureen Onyeagbako was the fifth Cardinal to provisionally qualify with her second-place throw of 60-1/2 in the 20-pound weight. Earlier this year, she qualified provisionally with a toss of 61-6 3/4.
In the long jump, Julie Tinker turned in her best mark of the year, finishing in eighth place with a jump of 19-9 3/4.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Tinker, Hyatt, Smith and Couper established a school record of 3:47.98. The Cardinal is next in action on Feb. 17 when it travels to Reno, Nevada for the Holiday Inn Classic.
