Indian Wells, Calif. - Stanford began competition at the 2006 National Collegiate Tennis Classic on Friday, as sophomore Whitney Deason and freshman Jessica Nguyen both won their opening two matches at the prestigious Indian Wells Tennis Garden for the 27th annual Nationwide Beverage National Collegiate Tennis Classic, Presented by Neutrogena Corporation.
Deason began the day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kentucky's Lara Maurer, before posting a 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-6(5) win over Florida's Diana Srebrovic, the top-seeded player in the tournament. Nguyen added a three-set win over Northwestern's Georgia Rose and ended the day with a 6-2, 6-3 upset victory over sixth-seeded Kendra Strohm of Texas.
Freshman Megan Doheny also competed, but lost a three-set match to fourth-seeded Whitney Benik of Florida in the first round.
