Stanford, Calif. - The Cardinal women's lacrosse team suffered an 11-5 defeat at the hands of Northwestern on Friday evening at Maloney Field. Stanford slips to 7-5 on the season, while Northwestern improves to 8-1.
The Wildcats got on the board first with an unassisted goal from Lindsay Finnochiaro just 3:09 into the contest. Following another Northwestern goal, Stanford cut the Wildcats' lead to one with a goal by sophomore Megan Burker with 20:51 remaining in the first half. Northwestern extended its lead to 3-1 with a goal at the 15:53 mark, but the Cardinal answered back as senior Abbi Hills netted the first of her two first half goals with 15:40 remaining in the opening period. The Wildcats entered the halftime break with a 6-3 advantage despite being out-shot by the Cardinal by an 11-10 margin.
Northwestern picked up where it left off in the second half, reeling off four straight goals to push its lead to 10-3. Stanford got its first goal of the second period from sophomore Nyerr Parham with 11:56 remaining in the game. Northwestern added another goal before Burker would cap the scoring for the evening, netting a goal with 2:11 remaining in the contest.
Senior goalkeeper Christina Saikus picked up nine saves in the cage for the Cardinal.
Stanford returns to action on Friday April 16, when they travel to Duke to meet the host Blue Devils and take on Davidson in Durham on Sunday, April 18.
