Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's gymnastics team was ranked No. 3 in the women's gymnastics preseason coaches poll released on Tuesday. The No. 3 ranking is the highest preseason ranking in program history, topping last season's No. 6 preseason rank. The Cardinal, who tied for third place with Alabama at last season's NCAA Championship, garnered four first place votes and tallied 554 total points in the poll, just 11 points behind No. 2 ranked Georgia.

UCLA, the reigning NCAA champion, received 15 first place votes and tallied 608 total points for preseason No. 1 honors. The Bruins are followed in the poll by Georgia, recipients of three first place votes and 565 overall points. The Cardinal captured the No. 3 spot, while Alabama and Utah round out the top-five with 531 and 530 overall points, respectively.

Florida was the only other squad to receive a first place vote, and earned a No. 6 ranking with 510 points. The remainder of the preseason top-10 includes Michigan (479) at No. 7, LSU (444) at No. 8, Arizona State (387) at No. 9, and Nebraska (386) at No. 10.

The Cardinal schedule features 10 opponents that are ranked in the preseason top-25 coaches poll. Stanford begins the season with trips to No. 25 Cal (1/14) and No. 21 Washington (1/21), before returning home to take on No. 12 Oregon State (1/28). Following a road trip to Central Michigan (2/4), the Cardinal will embark on the most challenging stretch of the 2005 slate. Stanford will meet No. 1 UCLA (2/18) and No. 9 Arizona State (2/25) at home, before traveling to No. 5 ranked Utah (3/4) where they will also compete against No. 6 Florida and No. 14 Iowa State. Just two days later, the Cardinal will host No. 4 Alabama (3/6) at Maples Pavilion. Stanford wraps up the regular season against San Jose State and Cal on March 19.
