STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 23 Stanford women's soccer team returns to Maloney Field as they host the Stanford/Nike Invitational this weekend against Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount and Texas Christian. Action begins Friday, Oct. 3, at 5 p.m. as TCU faces LMU, followed by Stanford against Santa Clara at 7:30 p.m. Tournament play wraps up on Sunday, Oct. 5, as Santa Clara takes on TCU at 11 a.m., followed by Stanford versus LMU at 1:30 p.m.

Season Update ...
The Cardinal improved its season record to 5-3-1 after consecutive wins last week against San Francisco (6-1) and at Saint Mary's (1-0, 2OT). The SMC match marked Stanford's second game that has gone into double overtime this season. Junior Natalie Sanderson scored the game-winner in the 106th minute of play on an assist from junior Amy Grady. Against USF, the Cardinal notched four goals in the first period. Senior Alisan Pabon scored her first two goals of the season against the Dons. Other Stanford scorers included senior co-captain Allyson Marquand, senior Brittany Oliveira, Sanderson and sophomore Leah Tapscott. Marquand continues to lead the squad with 26 shots, followed by Sanderson with 19 attempts. Goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart recorded her fourth season and 26th career shutout against St. Mary's. The Stanford squad has averaged 15.3 shots and 1.17 goals per game in 2002.

National Rankings ...
Stanford currently stands at No. 23 in the NSCAA national polls. The Cardinal are ranked No. 21 by Soccer America and No. 24 by Soccer Buzz.

Scouting Santa Clara ...
The Broncos boast a 4-3-3 record this season while averaging 2.7 goals per game. Santa Clara has averaged 14.7 shots per game, led in attempts by junior Leslie Osborne with 23 shots. Freshman Marian Dalmy and senior Tracy Hess lead the Broncos in scoring with four goals each. Last season, SCU finished with a 20-5-1 overall record and tied for first in the West Coast Conference with a 6-1 league record. Head coach Jerry Smith, in his 17th season, returned nine starters to the 2003 team.

Cardinal-Bronco Series ...
Santa Clara leads the all-time Cardinal-Bronco series 6-14-3. Their last meeting was in Stanford's season opener in 2002. The Cardinal recorded a 3-0 victory over the Broncos with scores from Brittany Oliveira, Marcie Ward and Callie Withers.

Scouting Loyola Marymount ...
The Lions hold a 5-2-3 record this season. Eighth-year head coach Gregg Murphy returned 10 starters from a 2002 squad that posted a 10-7-3 overall record and tied for third in the West Coast Conference. Senior Shari Nishikawa and sophomore Kellie Schroeder have combined for six-of-14 LMU goals this season. Nishikawa also leads the squad with 24 shots on a Lion squad that is averaging 14.3 shots per game. Goalkeeper Kelly Yukihiro boasts six shutouts this season along with 32 saves.

Cardinal-Lion Series ...
This match marks the first meeting between Stanford and Loyola Marymount.

Leading the Stanford squad as the 2003 Cardinal captains are Nicole Barnhart, Allyson Marquand and Natalie Spilger.

Movin' On Up ...
All-American goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart is now tied for third in the Cardinal record books after notching her 26th career shutout against St. Mary's. Last season, Barnhart set single-season Cardinal records in minutes played (2,047), total shutouts (18), goals allowed (4) and goals against average (0.189).

Up Next ...
The Cardinal begin Pac-10 Conference play at Arizona on Oct. 10, at 7 p.m., and at Arizona State at 1 p.m. on Oct. 12.
