Seventeen Stanford University track & field athletes (11 men, 6 women) will be competing at the prestigious Penn Relays (April 26-27) in Philadelphia ... The Penn Relays has long been regarded as one of the premier track & field meets in the United States ... This year, more than 22,000 athletes will be competing in a meet that is likely to top 100,000 for attendance for the third straight year ... Saturday's attendance has averaged 45,000 for the last six years, and makes the meet the best attended track & field event in the United States each year, and one of the best attended in the world ... Stanford will compete in seven relay events (men's and women's distance medley relay, women's 4 x 1,500 meters, men's 4 x 400 meter relay, women's 4 x 800 meters, men's 4 x mile, and the men's 4 x 800 meters) ... Last year at the Penn Relays, Stanford set three school records in the relay events, and the men's 4 x mile team captured top honors ... Also slated for Friday-Saturday will be the Cal Open at Berkeley ... A sizable number of Cardinal track & field athletes will be competing ... Friday is devoted exclusively to the hammer with the men's competition at 2:00 p.m., followed by the women's competition at 4:00 p.m. ... Field events begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the women's javelin, and the first running event is the women's 400 meter relay at noon.
Stanford track & field athletes have performed with high marks ... Seven Cardinal athletes have qualified for the NCAA's which will be held in New Orleans (May 29-June 1) ... The list includes Caroline Annis (10,000 meters, 34:09.40, fifth-best all-time at Stanford), Jillian Camarena (shot put, 53-10 1/4, second-best all-time at Stanford), Lauren Fleshman (1,500 meters, 4:18.11, 5,000 meters, 15:35.59, #2 all-time at Stanford), Louis Luchini (5,000 meters, 13:42.31, 10,000 meters, 28:49.86, seventh-best all-time at Stanford), Jonathon Riley (5,000 meters, 13:40.59), Grant Robison (5,000 meters, 13:40.30) and Donald Sage (10,000 meters, 28:40.12, sixth-best all-time at Stanford) ... Twenty other Stanford athletes have qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships, while 37 other athletes have qualified for the Pac-10 Championships (May 18-19) at Washington State.
Several Stanford athletes rank high in the Pac-10 standings for track & field ... Grant Robison is the conference leader in the 5,000 meters at 13:40.30 while Jonathon Riley (13:40.59), Louis Luchini (13:42.31) and Seth Hejny (13:50.77) rank 2-3-4, respectively ... Donald Sage is tops in the 10,000 meters (28:40.12) while Luchini is third at 28:49.86 ... Michael Ponikvar is first in the high jump (7-2 1/2) ... Laura Turner is first in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:16.24) while Jean Goff is third at 10:39.5 ... Lauren Fleshman is tops in the 5,000 meters (15:35.59) ... Stanford ranks third through sixth in the 1,500 meters led by Jonathon Riley (3:42.57) ... Jesse Thomas is third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (8:55.34) ... Milton Little is ranked third in the long jump (24-4 1/2) while Omer Inan is third in the discus (190-1) ... Nick Welihozkiy is ranked fourth in the hammer (195-2) ... Fleshman is second in the Pac-10 in the 1,500 meters (4:18.11) while Ashley Wysong is third in the 800 meters (2:06.21) ... Caroline Annis and Erin Sullivan rank second and third, respectively, in the 10,000 meters at 34:09.40 and 34:10.32 ... Jill Camarena resides in third place in the Pac-10 in the shot put (53-10 1/4).
Several Stanford athletes have jumped into the Top 5 all-time in the Stanford record book ... Grant Robison and Louis Luchini have jumped to fourth and fifth-best all-time at Stanford in the 5,000 meters with respective times of 13:40.30 and 13:42.31 ... Junior Lauren Fleshman's time of 15:35.59 in the 5,000 meters has moved her to second place all-time at Stanford ... Jill Camarena has thrown the shot put 53-10 1/4 this year, good for second place all-time in the record book ... Jessica Pluth has a career-best of 192-8 in the hammer which also is #2 all-time at Stanford ... Kimberly Stone has leaped 5-10 3/4 in the high jump to rank fourth all-time ... Molly Meyer threw the discus 173-4 to rank fifth all-time on The Farm ... Freshman Christine Moschella has jumped to fourth all-time in the 400 meters (55.18) ... Caroline Annis has a time of 34:09.40 in the 10,000 meters, fifth-best in the record book.
