STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University men's volleyball team has released its 2001 schedule, a 26-match docket that includes 14 contests against opponents that finished the 2000 season ranked in the nation's top 15. The Cardinal, which will host 13 games at Maples Pavilion, opens its 2001 campaign by hosting D'Youville on Tuesday, January 9 at 7:00 p.m.
Stanford opens with four of its first five matches at home, including a January 14 date with No. 13 Ball State and a January 21 match against No. 4 Pepperdine. After opening Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play against the Waves, the Cardinal travels to No. 12 CS Northridge (Jan. 26) and UC Santa Barbara (Jan. 14).
The Cardinal will spend the entire month of March on the road, playing matches at No. 8 Hawaii (twice), defending national champion UCLA (Mar. 9), UC Irvine (Mar. 10), La Verne (Mar. 27) and Long Beach State (Mar. 29).
April is Stanford's home month, as the Cardinal will host six matches at Maples: against BYU on Apr. 2 and 3, UC Santa Barbara (Apr. 6), CS Northridge (Apr. 7), UC Irvine (Apr. 12) and UCLA in the regular season finale on Apr. 13. Other key home dates include California on Feb. 2 and USC on Feb. 23.
Head coach Ruben Nieves, entering his eleventh year at the helm, will attempt to lead Stanford into the MPSF playoffs from Apr. 21-28. The winner of that tournament travels to the NCAA Championships, held at Long Beach State on Thursday, May 3 and Saturday, May 5. Nieves returns nine letterwinners, including MPSF Freshman of the Year and second-team All-American Curt Toppel, and national assist leader Josh Lukens. Stanford finished the 2000 season at 10-13 overall and 9-10 in the MPSF, ending the year ranked No. 11 in the USA Today/AVCA Top 15 poll.
