A season of excellence for Ashley Morgan got even better as the Stanford sophomore scored a career-best 9.95 on the floor exercise to extend her winning personal streak in the event to eight.

Morgan’s performance highlighted the dual-meet season finale for the No. 2 Stanford women’s gymnastics team, which finished second in a quadrangular meet at Haas Pavilion.

Stanford (17-1) scored 196.500 points to beat No. 18 Denver (194.625) and rival Cal (194.175). But the Cardinal suffered its first loss of the season, to No. 7 Oregon State (197.000), leaving Oklahoma (14-0) as the lone remaining undefeated team in the country.

Morgan entered the meet tied with Florida’s Ashanee Dickerson for the nation’s No. 1 ranking. But that was before Morgan scored her all-time best – and the highest score for a Stanford gymnast in any event this year – on her way to the Cardinal’s only individual victory in the meet.

Morgan’s score was one of five 9.9’s or above for Stanford. Among her teammates, perhaps the most impressive was the 9.90 by junior Nicole Pechanec making her collegiate vault debut.

The score placed Pechanec in a tie for second with Alyssa Brown, who earned two 9.90’s in the meet, including her runner-up score on the uneven bars, just ahead of Stanford senior captain Danielle Ikoma, who scored a career-high 9.875.

Teammate Shelley Alexander tied her career-best of 9.90 to place third on the floor.

Morgan also tied her season best in the all-around with a score of 39.325 to place second to Oregon State’s Makayla Stambaugh (39.525). Pechanec, making her all-around debut, scored 38.850, behind Ikoma, who matched her career-best of 39.275, and Alexander at 39.125.

Stanford earned its 23rd consecutive victory over Cal and is 32-1 in the rivalry since 1996. Stanford, which had beaten Oregon State is two previous meetings this year, gets another shot at the Beavers and the rest of the Pac-10 at the conference championships March 19 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.
