2000 Cardinal Open: The Stanford men's gymnastics team will host the annual Cardinal Open on Saturday, Jan. 29 at Burhnam Pavilion. The 15h-ranked Cardinal will take on eighth-ranked California and 20th-ranked UC Santa Barbara in the three-way meet. At last year's Cardinal Open, Stanford came out on top by holding off the Golden Bears by a 215.15-to-213.40 score. The Cardinal took top honors in three -- Floor Exercise, 36.55, Rings, 36.00, and Vault, 36.15 -- of the six events while Jason Blitz took first place on the high bar (9.350) and Craig Nesbitt was the top gymnast on the parallel bars (9.450). Alexander Nissen of Cal was the all-around champion at last season's Cardinal Open after posting a score of 54.950, with Stanford's Jason Katsampes and Adam Berkenbile finishing second with a 53.150 total.

Cal Has Our Number: The Cardinal and Golden Bears have gone head-to-head in the early part of the 2000 season with California eclipsing Stanford in each event. The first meeting came in a three-way meet, which included UC Santa Barbara, at California on January 14. Cal tallied a team score of 221.4, higher than Stanford's 214.4 and UCSB's 203.25. The second meeting between Bay Area rivals took place at Stanford on January 22, where the host Cardinal fell once again by a score of 222.7-to-215.6.

Durante Dialogue: Sophomore David Durante (Garwood, CA) finished in third place in last weekend's dual meet with California. Durante tallied a score of 53.450, with a high score of 9.200 in the parallel bars, in the six events. He trailed all-around champion Tal Moscovitz of Cal, who compiled a score of 55.875, and second place gymnast Cody Moore of Cal (54.000). Durante scored the following marks: Floor Exercise - 8.900, Pommel Horse - 8.950, Rings - 8.400, Vault - 9.000, Parallel Bars - 9.200, High Bars - 9.000.

National Rankings: The Cardinal slipped to No. 15 in the latest installment of the GymInfo national rankings released on January 24. The rankings are based on teams' highest combined score of the season. Stanford posted its highest total of the season with a 215.600 in last week's dual match versus California. In individual events, Stanford is tied with Umass for seventh in rings with a score of 36.950 and No. 12 in parallel bars with a 36.550 score. The Cardinal also rank No. 14 in pommel horse (36.50), No. 16 in the high bar (35.150), No. 17 in vault (36.350) and No. 18 in floor exercise (35.550). Stanford had been ranked No. 12 in the previous set of GymInfo rankings.
