Stanford, Calif. - No. 14 Stanford and California each took wins in today's semifinals of the 2003 Mountain Pacific Lacrosse League (MPLL) Tournament to advance to tomorrow's championship match at 1 p.m. on Maloney Field. The second-seeded Golden Bears started the day with a 15-6 win over third-seeded Denver before the top-seeded Cardinal blasted past fourth-seeded UC Davis, 19-3.

In the first semifinal match, the Pioneers got the first point on the board, but California netted the next six scores to put them in the lead. Denver tacked on one goal at the end of the first half to cut the Pioneers' deficit to 6-2. Golden Bears junior Emily Edwards came back from the break and chalked up three goals as Cal went on to a nine-goal showing in the second half. Denver keeper Steph Schneider picked up 17 saves on the day while Cal keepers Eden Coehlo and Kate Calligaro combined for nine saves and only six goals allowed.

In the second semifinal, Stanford took a 3-0 lead before UC Davis's Jaime Fitzpatrick found the back of the net. The Aggie midfielder scored all three of her team's goals in a 17:24 span in the first half. On the Cardinal's side of the field, sophomore Nina Pantano dropped in five goals while freshman Megan Burker added four goals and one assist. Nine different Stanford players picked up at least one goal as the Cardinal posted an 8-0 shutout in the second half. Stanford keepers Christina Saikus and Virginia Solomon combined for eight saves while UCD's Kristen Braasch collected 13 saves in goal.

Denver and Davis will compete at 11 a.m. tomorrow for the rights to third place in the conference while Stanford faces California at 1 p.m. as the Cardinal attempts to defend its 2002 MPLL title. Both games will be held at Maloney Field.
