More than 3,000 collegiate and high school athletes will be competing in the Stanford Track & Field Invitational this weekend, regarded as one of the finest meets in the country ... The list of prestigious collegiate teams is abundant with the likes of Michigan, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Colorado, SMU, and the Pac-10 foes Oregon, California, Washington and Washington State ... Also slated to compete is Arkansas from the Southeast Conference ... Arkansas's men's team recently won the NCAA Indoor Championship, while SMU was the runnerup at the NCAA Outdoor Men's Championships in 1999 ... Stanford will field a large contingent of top athletes ... The Cardinal men's team recently finished second at the NCAA Indoor's ... High School teams from as far east as Albany, New York, will be competing ... The collegiate sprint field is loaded with talent, including Ja Warren Hooker of Washington, the 1998 Pac-10 champion in the 100 and 200 meters ... The distance events, where Stanford is loaded with talent, will be exciting ... Gabe Jennings and Michael Stember, who finished 1-2 at the recent NCAA Indoors in the mile, are expected to compete, while Brad and Brent Hauser will also be competing in the distance events ... The Stanford runners will meet several of the nation's best runners including Bernard Lagat, the NCAA champion in the 5,000 meters, and ranked third in the world in the 1,500 meters ... Lagat is the Pac-10 champion in the 1,500 meters ... Jennings and Stember are slated to run in the 1,500 meters, while Jennings is also slated to run in the 5,000 meters.
