Stanford synchronized swimming faced Alabama and Florida in an early season tri-meet at Birmingham's Bell Aquatics Center, where strong swims by the entire Cardinal squad led to a convincing victory over the Blazers and Gators.
Stanford created an early lead with powerful swims in the opening trio event. Samantha Bongiovanni-Duclos, Sara Lowe, and Courtenay Stewart finished first with a score of 90.3, while Poppy Carlig, Melissa Knight, and Cassidy Ramage secured second at 86.3. The third Cardinal trio of Mari Maekawa, Hilary Homenko, and Hae-Rin Lee swam to a fourth-place finish with a score of 85.3.
Continuing a trend from earlier meets, Stanford's premier swimmers dominated the duet competition. A close contest between the two Cardinal routines produced another 1-2 sweep, with Bongiovanni-Duclos and Katie Norris edging out Lowe and Stewart to capture first place.
In the closing team event, Stanford's depth led to both gold and bronze medals. The Cardinal "A" squad of Bongiovanni-Duclos, Carlig, Knight, Ashley McHugh, Elizabeth-Anne Markman, Katie Norris, Lowe, Ramage, and Stewart finished first with a score of 93.6. Stanford's "B" squad of Maekawa, Homenko, Katherine Norris, and Lee placed third at 87.6.
The Cardinal hopes to build on this victory next weekend when they travel to Florida to compete at Florida State on Friday and at the University of Florida on Saturday.
