Stanford Softball Upsets No. 2 Arizona In Extra Innings

TUCSON, Ariz. -- A run in the eighth inning gave the ninth-ranked Stanford softball team (33-9, 2-6 Pac-10) a 4-3 victory over second-ranked Arizona (42-4, 6-1 Pac-10) at Hillenbrand Stadium today. Sophomore 1B Sarah Beeson hit her third home run of the season and recorded three RBI in the game. Sophomore CF Jessica Mendoza conluded the two-game series against the Wildcats going 6-for-7, with four doubles, two singles, a base on balls and a run scored.

The win, which snaps a five game Pac-10 losing streak, is the second victory over the Wildcats in 22 games.

Sophomore SS Robin Walker led off the eighth inning with a walk and replaced by pinch runner Deborah Splansky. A Mendoza walked moved Splansky to second. Beeson hit a fielders choice which got Mendoza out at second, but advanced Splansky to third. Splansky scored on a fielder's choice hit by freshman 2B Maureen LeCocq.

Arizona took an early lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on two singles, one walk and a single. Nicole Giordano opened the game with a single to right field and advanced to second after Cardinal 3B Jenni Shideler misplayed a ground ball hit by Katie Swan. After Stanford P Dana Sorensen struckout Arizona's Lauren Bauer, she walked the Wildcats' Toni Mascarenas to load the bases. A Jennie Finch base hit scored Giordano before Lindsey Collins drove in Swan with a sacrifice fly to rightfield.

Stanford answered in the top of the fourth inning as sophomore SS Robin Walker led off with a single and Mendoza hit her third double of the series to centerfied. With runners at second and third, Beeson hit a pitch from Arizona P Becky Lemke over the rightfield fence for her third home run of the season, giving Stanford a 3-2 lead.

Arizona tied the score 3-3 in the fifth inning. With two outs, Collins doubled to centerfield and came home a single by Chrissy Gil.

Stanford will return home for games against Oregon and Oregon State this weekend. The Cardinal will face Oregon State at 2 p.m. on Friday and Oregon on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
