Treasure, Island, Calif. - The Pacific Coast College Sailing Conference had their Team Racing Championship on Friday, April 10 at Treasure Island, home waters of the California Golden Bears. The event not only served as a conference championship but also as a warm-up for the hosts, Cal and Cal Maritime Academy, for the Team Race National Championships at the end of the season. Stanford came into the regatta well prepared and earned the win and the only spot to represent the district back at Treasure Island for the nationals.
The team of skippers Taylor Grimes '09, Peter Stemler '10 and Cole Hatton '11 with crews Carolyn Prioleau '12, Laura Lilly '12, and Kelly McKenna '09 only lost one race on their way to Stanford's second consecutive PCCSC Team Racing title. Slow to wake up on Friday, the team dropped their first race to UC Santa Barbara, but then won their remaining fourteen races against the other six teams in attendance. Going through both round robins and the final four unscathed and finishing most races with a perfect 1-2-3 score, the Cardinal looked to be the most experienced and best prepared team in attendance.
The ICSA National Team Racing Championship will be hosted by Cal and Cal Maritime on Treasure Island from May 29-31. Stanford will be one of 14 teams that all qualified in their respective district championships to face off in the most competitive team race of the year.
