Orinda, Calif. - The Stanford women's lacrosse team spoiled the season opener for Saint Mary's, handing the Gaels a 14-5 defeat at Miramonte High School in Orinda on Friday evening. With the win, the Cardinal improves to 2-0 and remains unbeaten in MPSF play, while Saint Mary's falls to 0-1.

Stanford took command of the contest from the start, opening the game by scoring the first seven goals and building a 6-0 lead just 13 minutes into the game, while scoring three free position goals in that stretch. Junior co-captain Megan Burker scored her only goal of the evening after just 1:18 of play, and senior Kelsey Twist assisted on a pair of goals by freshman Daphne Patterson as the Cardinal dominated the play early on.

The Cardinal headed into the halftime break with a 9-1 lead, after coach Uhlfelder's squad answered a Gael goal with a pair of scores. Senior Nina Pantano and sophomore Sarah Bach each scored off of assists from Burker to close out play in the first frame.

Just three minutes into the second half, Patterson found the back of the net once again, as the New York native registered her first career hat trick. The Cardinal kept the pressure on as Bach wrapped up her own hat trick with 18:50 left to play.

The Gaels managed to score back-to-back goals late in the second half, but the Cardinal answered back with goals from Bach and Twist to seal the victory.

Bach paced all scorers with five goals, while Patterson scored three and Twist tallied a pair of goals. Also scoring for the Cardinal were Pantano, Burker, sophomore Jessica Verrilli, and sophomore Michelle DeChant. Burker added a game-high three assists, while Twist contributed on two scores.

Freshman goalkeeper Laura Shane made her second straight start in the cage and registered her second win, making eight saves. Junior Kate Horowitz and sophomore Carly Posner also made appearances in net for the Cardinal.

Stanford continues MPSF play on the road this Sunday, as the Cardinal travels to UC Davis for a 1:00 pm game.
