Stanford, Calif. - After winning the Team Race Championship on Friday, the Cardinal moved on to the Coed Dinghy Championship on Saturday and Sunday. Stanford and St. Francis Yacht Club co-hosted the event in which the top eleven teams from the district competed for four spots at the National Championship Semifinals to be held in Boston May 2-3. The event followed the St. Francis Intersectional by only one weekend, and gave the hosts another tune-up for hosting both the women's and coed national championships at the end of the season.
The Cardinal team, made up of Cole Hatton '11 and Kelly McKenna '09 in A division and Nick Dugdale '12 and Hayley Tobin '11 in B division, competed strongly over the two-day event to garner their third-place finish. Finishing the regatta with 93 points to the 75 points of winner UCSB and 85 of second place U Hawaii, the Stanford team made some crucial mistakes that took them out of contention for the win. Looking forward to the semifinals, the sailors will need to focus on eliminating mistakes such as being over the line early, taking penalty turns, and being caught up in traffic on the racecourse.
The ICSA National Championship Semifinals are going to be hosted by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on May 2-3 in Boston Harbor in conjunction with the Boston stopover of the Volvo Around the World Ocean Race. The top 36 teams in the country will compete in two distinct events, from which eighteen will move on to the Coed Dinghy Championships hosted by St. Francis and Stanford June 1-3.
