In an intense match-up this afternoon, the Cardinal (3-0 Overall, 3-0 WWLL) came away with a 9-8 victory over WWLL rival St. Mary's. The Gaels took the early lead, up 3-0, until senior tri-captain Katharine Barnes tallied Stanford's first goal with 9:27 remaining in the first half. Barnes led the pack today with a hat trick, she is also the team's current scoring leader with 6 goals on the season. A close game it was tied half-way through the second half, but after a goal by junior tri-captain Caroline Osterwise with 12:27 left on the clock Stanford took the lead for good.
Helping ignite the Cardinal on offense were sophomore Lauren Dietrich with back-to-back goals in the first half and freshman Abbi Hills , who also scored 2 goals. Junior Emily Rodriguez led the defense with 3 caused turnovers and freshman Noor Dawood added 4 groundballs. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachael Neumann finished with12 saves and 9 clears.
This win marks the third straight for the Cardinal under first-year head coach Michele Uhlfelder (Maryland '91). Currently undefeated this season, Stanford is hoping to repeat its success as three-year reigning WWLL Champions. On the road next week the Cardinal travels to Denver to play the Denver Pioneers on Saturday at 1pm MT and the George Mason Patriots on Sunday at 2pm MT.
