Men's Swimming Has Successful Summer At International Competitions

Stanford, Calif. - Current and former Stanford men's swimmers had a successful summer at several international competitions including the 2001 World Championships, World University Games and Goodwill Games. Eight Cardinal swimmers competed at these three events with great success.

At the World Championships, Junior Randall Bal won the 50m backstroke (23.37) and took second in the 100m back (54.93). Sophomore Markus Rogan placed fifth in the 100m back (55.08) and second in the 200m back (1:58.07). Former Cardinal Anthony Robinson turned in a second place showing in the 50m breast (27.73) and finished 23rd in the 100m breast (1:02.98). Another former Stanford swimmer, Tom Wilkens, placed second in the 200m IM (2:00.73) and third in the 400m IM (4:15.94).

Currently, Bal is ranked second in the world in the 50m back and fifth in the 100m back. Rogan is ranked second in the world in the 200m back and 8th in the 100m back. Robinson checks in ranked second in the 50m breast and 6th in the 100m breast in the world rankings. Wilkens is ranked second and third respectively in the 200m IM and 400m IM.

At the World University Games, sophomore Peter Marshall stole the show with three first place finishes in four events. Marshall took home the gold in the 50m back (25.79), 100m back (54.74) and in the 400m Medley Relay. He placed fourth in the 200m back (2:01.03) as well.

Marshall is currently ranked seventh in the world in the 50m back, second in the 100m back and 15th in the 200m back.

Junior Dan Westcott represented Stanford at the Goodwill Games, turning in a time of 25.95 in the 50m back and 55.33 in the 100m back. He also swam a 54.44 in the 100m fly and a 2:00.49 in the 200 fly.

Westcott is ranked 11th in the world in the 50m back and 12th in the 100m back according to current rankings. He is also ranked 38th in the 100m fly and 43rd in the 200m fly.
