Long Beach, CA- The Cardinal sailors took to the water this weekend to begin their bid to qualify for all three spring national championships. On Friday, April 11, the Cardinal raced all day to secure a bid directly to the Team Racing National Championships to be hosted in Newport, RI at the end of May.
With a great deal of quality experience from competitive regattas all season, the team went in with confidence. Seniors Eddie Conrad and Carrie Denning anchored the effort with the other two boats of sophomore Peter Stemler and freshman Hannah Burroughs and freshman Cole Hatton with sophomore Leigh Hammel performing very well. Competing in fifteen races between a double round robin with the seven teams present and a final four, the Stanford squad lost only one race. The team won most races handily, walking away with a 1-2. Good starts and strong boatspeed contributed most to the team's success, but their proficiency in team racing helped them get out of the tightest situations.
With the overall victory, the team could look forward to the next two days of competition in which they would need to finish at least top four in the coed dinghy PCC's to qualify for the National semifinal regatta.
