IRVINE, Calif.-- Stanford swimmers Tobias Oriwol and Matthew Swanston, both swimming for Canada, each reached finals of the 200-meter backstroke on the third day of the Pan Pacific Championships. Oriwol was eighth and Swanston was 12th.
Oriwol, who last swam for Stanford in 2006, finished eighth at 2:00.79 as Olympic champion Ryan Lochte won the event at 1:54.12.
Swanston, a freshman last season, finished fourth in the consolation finals with a time of 2:01.45 as seven-time Olympic medalist Aaron Peirsol dominated the field with a time of 1:56.67. Swanston had the 13th fastest prelim time (2:00.83), while Oriwol had the seventh fastest time (1:59.56).
In the 400-meter freestyle prelims, Cardinal distance All-American Chad La Tourette was the fourth American and unable to swim in the consolation finals with a time of 3:50.61, despite the 11th fastest time.
Four Stanford men continue to compete at the Pan Pacifics through Sunday.
