AMES, Iowa - Stanford distance runners Louis Luchini and Jonathon Riley reached the automatic qualifying times for the NCAA Championships (March 9-10) last weekend at the Iowa State Invitational at the Henry Hoak Indoor Track Stadium.
Riley and Luchini both ran their best times of the season and finished first and second, respectively, in the 5,000 meters. The automatic qualifying time of 13:58.15 was not a problem for either runner as Riley finished with a time of 13:52.20 while Luchini was right behind him in 13:53.87. Both times are in Stanford's top five all-time indoor list. Luchini was competing in his first meet of the indoor season and Riley set the school record earlier this season in the 3,000 meters.
The Cardinal also had four other athletes attain the provisional qualifying mark for NCAAs. Riley and Gabe Jennings provisionally qualified in the mile as Riley finished second in 4:01.89. Jennings was sixth with a time of 4:04.74. In the 3,000 meters, Seth Hejny recorded a time of 8:04.76 and finished second. The other provisional mark came in the high jump as Michael Ponikvar won the event for the third time in the last three competitions. His jump of 7-2 1/4 tied his season best.
In other events, Donald Sage and Thomas Murley both attained MPSF qualifying marks in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, respectively. In the 400 meters, Goff ran a season best with a time of 48.54. Stanford is next in action on Feb. 17 when it travels to Reno, Nevada for the Holiday Inn Classic.
