STANFORD, Calif. - Big things are expected for Stanford lacrosse again this season as the Cardinal will enter the season with a No. 6 national ranking. The IWLCA Poll was released on Friday with Stanford matching its highest-ever national ranking.
The Cardinal finished last season with a No. 7 ranking, but reached No. 6 during the season. The No. 6 ranking to begin this season is tops for the Stanford program, bettering the No. 13 ranking to start 2011.
Stanford has won the MPSF Tournament title for seven-consecutive seasons and was only team from the conference to be ranked. The Cardinal was once again picked to win the conference title in the preseason coaches' poll in 2012.
Despite the lack of ranked teams, Stanford will still play a difficult schedule in 2012. The Cardinal will face a tough non-conference season with six ranked teams, including its first five opponents. The Cardinal will open with No. 1 Northwestern on February 10, at 7pm, at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Wildcats are the defending national champion and will provide a stiff test for a young Cardinal team.
The other ranked teams on the Stanford schedule are No. 9 James Madison, No. 16 Albany, No. 18 Ohio State, No. 19 Vanderbilt and No. 20 Notre Dame. The Cardinal will also face Harvard who is receiving votes in the preseason poll.
