Stanford Synchro finished 3rd overall at the 2004 U.S. National Synchronized Swimming Championships held at Stanford University, April 28- May 1st. This year marked the first time that Stanford has showcased a full team at U.S. Nationals. The Cardinal entered a solo, two duets, and a team routine. Although the smallest team among the top four clubs, Stanford performed superbly and captured two silver medals.
In the solo event finals, Katie Norris of Stanford wowed the home crowd, capturing a silver medal with a score of 95.634. Bill May of Santa Clara won the gold medal with a composite score of 98.700 and Santa Clara's Bianca VanderVelden finished third at 94.667.
In their best performance of the season, the Stanford pair of Norris and Ashley McHugh claimed second in the duet with a final score 95.384. Santa Clara Aquamaids claimed gold with a final score of 96.267 and Santa Clara finished third with a 95.050. Stanford duet Shella Sadovnik and Elizabeth-Anne Markman finished 8th with a score of 91.000.
Stanford University captured fourth place in the team event. Although the team struggled in the final two weeks with injuries and health concerns, the athletes persevered and finished with an outstanding final performance. Stands packed with rowdy and enthusiastic Stanford fans contributed to the team's best swim of the year.
