STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford men's and women's crew teams began their 2000-01 season in fine fashion on Saturday afternoon, as both teams won their respective races at the Head of the American Fall Regatta.

On the men's side, the Cardinal "A" boat finished 55 seconds ahead of second-place Sacramento State. The victory avenged a three-second loss in the event last season to the Hornets. Stanford's "B" boat finished third in the field of twelve.

"This was a good day for these men and their commitment to each other," said first-year Stanford head men's coach Craig Amerkhanian after his first win with the Cardinal. "I am very pleased with them."

For the women, the Cardinal "A" boat won the 5,000-meter event with a time of 18:08. Stanford's "B" boat finished in ninth place with a time of 20:09. Hosted by Sacramento State, both the men's and women's events were held at Lake Natoma in Folsom, Calif.

Stanford held off the host Hornets to capture the title, as Sac State finished second with a time of 18:13. Pacific-10 Conference rival California clocked in at 18:15 to finish third.
