Jan. 5, 2007
The preseason has gone by fast and we are getting excited to kick off the 2007 season in Athens, Georgia against the defending NCAA Champions. Our preparation has been focused and thorough and we are ready to show off our hard work. SWG is 14 deep, the largest team in Stanford history, with exceptional talent, and wonderful individuals.
In the gym we have upgraded our routines, and as any great team would, we have worked on making our weaknesses our strengths. Sophomore Nicole Ourada has shown why she is one of our team captains and a great leader by upgrading her bar and floor routines. It's great to see college athletes learning pike full-ins on floor and double layouts off bars. Nikki is proving that with hard work anything can happen. Pinch and Elmo have also added double layouts off bars and Aimee will add a 1 1/2 twist punch front for her last pass on floor. We will also look to upgrade tumbling and bar dismounts as the season progresses.
Morning training, spinning and gym-specific conditioning have all been an important part of the pre-season. We have worked hard on our conditioning program the last three months, and that should support this team over the four-month season that awaits. The conditioning while not easy is necessary and the team showed great commitment in this phase of their training
We have also been building our confidence and competitive spirit as a group through intra-squads, pressure routines, and team challenges. The team has shown progress from week to week, with athletes learning and filling roles for this team. I feel very good about where we are right now, and I am confident that we will start the year off strong.
Our team has outstanding leadership this year from all of our sophomores and juniors who have stepped up and set a great example for our freshmen. They have desire, and are determined to have a great season. Our three captains, Tab, Liz and Nikki lead by example, set the tone at practices, and complement each other with their strengths.
SWG will also have some of the best performers in the country in Allyse, Tabitha, Steph, Liz, Pinch and others. Whenever our team steps out on the floor you are guaranteed a performance to remember. They all move beautifully, and are flat out fun to watch.
Lastly, a word about this 2007 group...Whether they are in the gym, the classroom, or helping out in the community they dive in feet first and put their hearts and souls into all they do. I am most impressive however, with the relationships they have with their family, friends, teammates and fans. They are sincere, take the time, and put in the energy to make a difference in the lives they touch. It is a joy to be surrounded by such incredible young women.
Mark your calendars with all of our home dates because you won't want to miss an opportunity to see this team compete. Thanks for your support and GO CARD!
