Pacific Palisades, Calif. - Stanford found success at the Riviera Tennis Club today, as all three singles entrants and the Cardinal's solo doubles pair all won their matches and advanced to the second round of play at the 2005 ITA All-American Championship.
Junior Anne Yelsey scored the biggest win at the tournament, knocking out the top-ranked player in the nation with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Florida's Jennifer Magley. Fellow junior Theresa Logar followed suit, defeating the sixth-ranked player in the country in a three-set victory over Georgia's Shadisha Robinson. Senior Alice Barnes, ranked No. 10 in the nation and seeded No. 6 in the tournament, added a 6-1, 6-2 victory over 2003 ITA All-American Champion Cristelle Grier of Northwestern to round out the Cardinal's sweep in singles.
With an 8-2 opening-round victory over Kentucky's ninth-ranked pair of Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk, sixth-ranked Barnes and Yelsey advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw.
Tomorrow, competition begins at 9 a.m., as Yelsey will face TCU's Helena Besovic, Barnes will take on Florida's Diana Srebovic and Logar will challenge USC's Amanda Fink in the second round of the tournament. Barnes and Yelsey's next opponent is still being determined, as USF's Gabrielle Duch and Neyssa Etienne are playing Notre Dame's Christian and Catrina Thompson.
