Competing in the South Series 5 Designate, a conference championship qualifier event hosted by USC, were two freshmen skippers with sophomore crews. In A division Nick Dugdale '12 and Hayley Tobin '11 finished second, finishing out of the top 3 only three times in the nine races contested. In B division Oliver Riihiluoma '12 and Ale Lynberg '11 won, finishing nine points ahead of the second place UCSB. Riihiluoma and Lynberg won an incredible four of the nine races competed in their division. Overall, the team left victorious by beating out home team and second place USC by five points in the 28-team event. The Cardinal sailors will look forward to meeting the competition seen at this event later in the season at the conference championships.

Making their second collective trip of the season to the east coast, the Stanford team racing team finished 6th in the ten-team field at the Bob Bavier Team Race Intersectional hosted by the College of Charleston. The team of Taylor Grimes '09, Kelly McKenna '09, Peter Stemler '10, Cole Hatton '11, Justin Doane '12 and Laura Lilly '12 faced difficult and constantly changing conditions. Saturday morning brought winds of 8 to 10 knots that quickly increased to 15 to 18 knots. Slow to adjust to the conditions and the boats, the Cardinal began the day with a 2-6 record. Thanks to some lighter breeze following the passing of a storm in the afternoon, the Cardinal were able to get their feet under them and improve their record to 7-6 through the beginning of round 2. Sunday brought more storms and building breeze. The Cardinal team racers were able to finish out the regatta with an even 9-9 record after the two complete round robins. Missing the final four by a mere two points and citing the clear improvement throughout the weekend, senior captain Taylor Grimes exclaimed "we are encouraged by our individual race results, and we look forward to defending our home waters at our final home event [the McIntyre Team Race] this coming weekend."

Coming up this weekend, the women will travel to their first intersectional of the season, the Charleston Women's Spring Intersectional. The coed team will compete at both the McIntyre Team Race hosted by Stanford and the Cal Team Race hosted by Cal. For the seniors, the McIntyre will be their final true home event to be hosted out of the Sailing Center in Redwood City.
